NHS whistleblowers: are they really being protected now?
NHS whistleblowers: are they really being protected now?
A former doctor at a dementia ward, who’s identity is not
revealed due to safety and legal reasons, is one of the whistleblowers who has
lost their job. The doctors who raise issues are fired, bullied and paid a
large sum to stay quiet. The doctor says he/she wouldn’t mind if the money is taken
back, which will happen if the hospital found out about the interview, as long
as it raises awareness of the problems in this sector. Dr. Peter Wilmshurt, a
former whistleblower himself, says it takes the hospital about 5 million pounds
in total to silence a single junior doctor.
My opinion:
I have come across a few articles about whistleblowing in
the health care sector, but nothing I read comes close to what I’ve just seen. The
doctor who did the interview said things about the patients not being able to
reach their food or left alone in their own urine or feces because there’s not
enough staff to help the patients. And the shockingly big amount of money that is
paid to the doctors who aren’t willing to stay quiet anymore is absolutely
disgusting to me. I feel shocked that I didn’t know about such a widespread
problem before.
