Just how bad is bad grammar?
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-22378402

A new award has joined the award world: the Bad Grammar Awards is set up to point out the declining quality of grammar these days, especially for young people. Tom Hodgkinson, the editor of Idler Magazine, set up the award because his children’s Latin teacher pointed out to him that grammar isn’t being taught well enough and the letters he receives for his magazine contain shockingly bad grammar.
Michael McCarthy, professor at the University of Nottingham, agrees with Hodgkinson but also states that English grammar consists of grammar for writing, speaking, texting and broadcasting for example. They believe that this will help young people understand their language better.

My opinion:

I’m not much of a grammar Nazi but I believe that the Bad Grammar Awards can be used to great ends. It’s not just about criticizing each other, it’s a fun kind of way to teach grammar. For example: they talk about the William Shakespeare prize for a fellow broadcaster because this broadcaster mixes up the comparative and superlative grammatical system. I do agree with them that grammar these days is not as important to young people as it ought to be. I myself notice that my Dutch grammar isn’t all that either, which is why the Bad Grammar Awards can be used very effectively (and because it’s fun of course).

I share the same thought on this one. The award is not meant to humiliate people; but just to show them that grammar is definitely important and that more time should be spent on teaching it. I sometime notice that I tend to be a grammar nazi (which doesn't mean that my grammar is always flawless) and if I have to check application letters at Albert Heijn for example I'd rather choose someone who hardly makes grammar mistakes than someone who does. This will also happen in later life so a good basis is important I believe.
