New national curriculum to introduce fractions to five-year-olds
New
national curriculum to introduce fractions to five-year-olds
A final version of the new national curriculum has
been published. This new national curriculum will focus more on technology than
the former one. They will be taught more on Internet safety and from the age of
five they will even learn how to write programs. David Cameron is an admirer of
the new curriculum as a parent. Improvements include them being taught about
climate change and the human involvement in this, more mathematics and
evolution theory will be introduced in primary schools. This national curriculum
is only applicable for schools in England but free schools will be able to
ignore this.
My opinion:
I think this is a great change. I have felt that
schools lack these kinds of improvements for some time now. Of course there are
some schools that only work with laptops nowadays, but instead of introducing
more computer related subjects they just work on them for the already existing
courses. I think it’s very important for children to learn about Internet
safety from a young age and how to deal with all these developments. Also the
introduction on several science courses and for example the climate change is a
huge step forward.

Jeremy Forrest jailed for pupil abduction and sexual offences
Jeremy Forrest, a married Math teacher, has been convicted
of child abduction and has admitted five counts of sexual activity with a
minor. He got four and a half years for sexual activity with a child and
received an extra one-year for child abduction. He will be banned from ever
working with children and from having unsupervised contact. The couple ran away
to France after the police were informed of their affair. The sexual
relationship had been going on for a little more than a year. The school will
be investigated as well since it has been linked to three more cases of child
sex abuse.
My opinion:
I for one don’t get how that school is still open. After the
second case of child sex abuse there should be a widespread investigation, but
after the third you’d think it’s just done. What this man did is more than
wrong and what he did to that girl is just terrible. He alienated her from her
parents and her family and he should have known better. There really is no
excuse. I hope this guy never gets to do something like this again, and that
the girl can recover from this.

Woman who racially abused fellow passengers sentenced to jail
Woman who racially abused
fellow passengers sentenced to jail
Jacqueline Woodhouse, has
been sent to jail for 21 weeks. In January she got on the London Central line
train, drunk from drinking champagne and delivered a racist rant to her fellow
passengers. This wasn’t the first time she has acted like this in public, four
years ago there was a similar occurrence. The man who filmed her, and put the
video on YouTube, doesn’t think her sentence is long enough (part of her rant
was focused on him), and hopes she can learn from this. She has since lost her
job, has been banned from the London Underground and says she’s ashamed of what
she’s done.
My opinion:
Honestly, I don’t think this
woman is really that ashamed of what she’s done. Being drunk is no excuse for
the behavior she displayed and especially since it has occurred before. I do
honestly hope she can learn from this experience that no good comes from acting
the way she did, and even if she really feels like this she is better off
keeping it inside. What she said really goes too far and I think it’s good that
an example can be made from her. One can only hope this doesn’t happen again.

Plague pit found in central London
Plague pit found in central London
Construction site workers building a high speed cross rail
have uncovered a plague pit in central London. The remains were found
underneath Charterhouse square, which used to be outside the city wall in
medieval times. Although this is not the first discovery of mass graves it is a
very important one. This discovery can give us a lot more knowledge on the
bacteria that caused the Black Death and about the people who lived in London
in those times. There was some worry that exposing the bacteria would cause
people to actually get sick again, but luckily this was not the case of course.
My opinion:
I’m very intrigued by archeological findings, I love
documentaries about this stuff and the tragedy that was the Black Death is a
very interesting topic to me. But it would be amazing to have new information
about the people who died because of the plague and more information about the
plague as well through DNA testing. I also find it a bit bizarre that the mass
grave was right in the center of modern London! They knew there was
a mass grave somewhere, but not the exact location. I think I even walked over the site once before; which
is pretty unreal.

Prism: security services operated within law, says David Cameron
Prism: security services operated within law, says David Cameron
http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2013/jun/10/prism-british-security-law-david-cameron
David Cameron, answered some questions about the recent “Prism
scandal” at an event in Essex. The prime minister defended the intelligence
program by explaining that the UK is dangerous right now, and the recent
Woolwich attack supported this. But when a reporter asked him if he was aware
that GCHQ was working with Prism he answered the question vaguely and explained
that William Hague would answer their questions today. Sir Malcolm Rifkind, former
foreign secretary, says the whistleblower himself (Edward Snowden) broke the
law but GCHQ might also have worked outside of the legal framework.
My opinion:
I think it’s incredibly easy for David Cameron to sidestep
the questions on whether he has known about GCHQ’s involvement with Prism. Like
Facebook, Google and Microsoft the government can easily deny it as a whole but
it still doesn’t change the fact that it has happened, and is still happening.
The whole scandal quite shocked me, but what scared me even more is that I wasn’t
as shocked as I should have been. Another excuse that Cameron used was that
GCHQ was working within the law, but what does that even mean anymore with our
privacy laws? Does anybody really know?

Red Nose Day
-->
The night of the day this news segment aired
it was the 25th red nose day. Red nose day is founded by Richard
Curtis and has been a fundraising comic relief event. Richard Curtis states
that he still feels great relief that the celebrities joining the event this
year grew up with the event and have been raising money for it all these years.
This year also features a lot of special events: such as a group of six
celebrities including Mel C take on the largest river in Africa, One Direction
visit poverty stricken Ghana and it will also be the last life broadcast from
the television centre.
My opinion:
Personally, I love red nose day. It’s such a
great way to raise money and spirit. I wish we had these great annual events in
the Netherlands, it must be so rewarding to take part in such a big event and
help so many people in need. It sounds like a very promising day, with these
big events lined up. I think it's a very touching thing to see all these people so involved, especially the part where a popular pop band visit Ghana and to see the situation there was quite shocking.

Press Regulations
BBC one news - 18/3/13
David Cameron can't agree with his coalition
on the press regulations. David Cameron believes the press should continue on
without ay political interferences in the news. The liberal democrats side with
the labour party on this front and this might undermine Cameron’s authority,
not only now but also later in his career. The liberal democrats and the labour
party want to make sure that the royal charter stays exactly what it is now. There’s
only one day left until the voting begins in the Commons but after three months
there is still no deal between the parties.
My opinion:
I do think this is a tough one. Because it
is the same royal charter that he first agreed on that he is questioning now. I
do think it’s very interesting for him to take the press’ needs into account
and listen to both parties. What the downside is of course that this issue may
see a rift in the coalition. An agreement hasn’t been abandoned though. But it
doesn’t really matter on what they agree on, there’s always going to be
somebody affected by the issue who isn’t going to be very happy about it.
